Happy Thanksgiving! Ways to Give Back to the Community

thanksgiving-day_10065489-031914Happy Thanksgiving!  We, here at The Scherer Team, are thankful for our many clients and partners.  The relationships we have built over the years are important to us, and we are thankful for our many friendships and blessings.  During this holiday season, we begin to reflect on all of the good in our lives.  And as we take inventory of all that we have, we realize the importance of giving back to our community.  So, we thought we’d take this opportunity to share some ideas of the ways we can all be charitable.  Whether it’s through time, talent, or treasures, we all have something to give.

Soup Kitchens and Food Pantries

One of the easiest ways to serve in your community is to take a shift at the local soup kitchen.  There are many jobs that volunteers can do, from cooking and cleaning to spooning out servings of home cooked food to the homeless community or those that are simply down on their luck a bit.  Not everyone has time to take a shift, but there’s plenty you can do if you can’t give of your time.  Food pantries and soup kitchens, alike, have a constant need for a supply of food.  Most of these places take donations year round.  Your donation can come in the form of canned goods or you can make a monetary donation.

Hospitals and Retirement Homes

Volunteering at local hospitals and retirement homes is another option.  There’s much to be done in both of these environments.  Most hospital volunteers spend time delivering items from one place to another. There’s always a need for gifts and flowers to be delivered to patient rooms or food items from the cafeteria.  There are also special programs that require some training such as spending time holding and rocking premature infants.  In retirement homes, volunteering may consist of spending time with the elderly just talking and listening, or possibly reading and playing card games.

Animal Shelters

If spending time with furry friends is more your style, there’s no shortage of need.  Most animal shelters and rescues have limited funds as well as people willing to volunteer.  Feeding animals, cleaning kennels, bathing dogs, and helping pets find new homes are just a few of the opportunities available at the animal shelter.

Reasons to Volunteer

There are so many ways to give back to our community, the possibilities are endless.  And, it’s always a “win – win” situation.  Studies show that people who give of their resources get the benefit of “the happiness affect.”  Here’s what happens when you volunteer…

  • You feel more connected to others
  • You feel more connected to your community
  • Your mind and body is improved
  • Your career can be advanced
  • You experience more fun and fulfillment

Our wish for you is that you experience all of this and more throughout the holiday season.  As always, we are here for your real estate needs.  Please contact the Scherer Team at 888-300-4431.

Choosing a Reliable Auto Service Shop

Close-up detail of a mechanic tightening or lossening the lugs of an aluminum rim.

For most of us, owning a car is a fact of life.  Along with car ownership, just as with home ownership, is the responsibility of upkeep and maintenance.   And with that comes the daunting task of finding a reputable mechanic.  Let’s face it, many of us are not mechanically inclined and can easily be “taken for a ride” by a repair shop that is less than trustworthy.  So, how can we avoid being the victim in this scenario?  Our advice is to spend a little time doing some research.  This can save you both time and money when all is said and done.  Here are some tips for finding a reliable and honest mechanic or service center.

Referral from Friends and Family

Of course, the best way to find just about any service is to rely on the experience of others.  Not only can you find out, from friends and family, where to take your car, you can also compile a pretty nice list of places NOT to visit.  This is easy with today’s social media sites.  Who has time to make phone calls to ask for referrals?  Take it to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat (just to name a few.)  Whatever the question, folks are all too eager to share experiences, both good and bad.

Social Media

Not only can you find plenty of information from your friends on social media, you can also find plenty of information on most businesses through their social media profiles.  Conduct a search of some of the repair shops in your area on the sites you frequent to see what you can find.  But don’t stop there!  Keep looking….

Yelp and Angie’s List

With sites like Yelp and Angie’s List, a good auto repair shop may be just a few clicks away.  Businesses can’t pay to get reviews on these platforms.  Again, relying on the notion that people like to share experiences, you can read reviews about service shops on everything from customer service and price to waiting time and reliability.  It’s wise not to just read a few reviews and move on.  You’ll get a better picture of any business if you look at many reviews over time.  Yelp even has its own app, and it can be used to find more than just a good repair shop.  No matter what service you’re looking to find, Yelp and Angie’s List should have plenty of reviews to help in your search.

Location….It may not be everything it’s cracked up to be!

Don’t settle for the closest or most convenient shop.  If the one in closest proximity just happens to be upstanding and reputable, that is great!  But don’t settle just because it’s easy to access.

Take a long look around….Sometimes it is okay to judge a book by its cover!

Visit the repair shop and pay close attention.   Do they have clean and well-organized facilities?  Obviously, an auto repair shop will not be a sterile environment, but you should expect it to be reasonably neat and tidy.  Also, look around at the other cars that are in for service.  Are they similar to yours? Look for certifications and diplomas.  These should be hanging in the office and in individual mechanic areas.  Are there any service awards?  Also, look for signs of membership in consumer groups such as the Better Business Bureau.  Do they have a “menu” posted for all to see?  Labor rates and fees as well as guarantees should be posted in the customer area along with accepted methods of payment.

Give them a “test drive.”

Don’t try out a new service shop with a major repair.  Begin with a minor job such as an oil change.  This gives you the opportunity to get to know more about them.  Are they professional and courteous?  Do they do what they say they will do?  If you are pleased with the service provided, you may want to move forward with a more complex repair.

….Wishing you safe travels, wherever your car may take you!  And, as always, if you are looking to find a key to a new home in the near future, please contact the Scherer Team at 888-300-4431.

Help! I Can’t Afford to Sell my House!

young desperate businessman holding help sign looking worried suffering work stress sitting at computer desk on white background office in business project problem

Are you stuck in a home that you can’t afford to sell?  If so, you’re not alone!  Studies show that up to 50%, or more, of Americans struggle to keep up with the demands of homeownership, with up to 12% having negative equity.  Negative equity means you owe more on your home than the value.  If you’ve found yourself in this position, it’s no wonder you can’t afford to sell.  But don’t give up!  There are some things you can do to turn it all around.  It may take a little time and creativity, but staying the course will benefit you in the long run.

Pay Your Debt Down

Obviously, the best way out of this scenario is to pay down the principal balance on your mortgage.  This means you’ll need to make more than the monthly payment each month, with the extra going directly to your balance.  In some cases, this means sacrifice.  Taking an extra part-time job or weekend job is a great way to earn extra cash to put toward your loan each month.  Making extra money doesn’t necessarily mean working outside the home.  If you have a hobby, such as knitting or furniture restoration, maybe it’s time to think about turning it into money.  Selling your services or homemade goods can be quite lucrative!

Increase Your Home’s Value

One possibility of getting your home’s value up is to complete a renovation or install upgrades that will literally increase the value of the property.  Even small cosmetic improvements and can start to get the value up.  Of course, you’ll want to do your research first so you can focus on upgrades that actually work!  If you’re a “do-it-yourselfer,” that’s even better!  The less you have to spend up front, the more you have on the other side.

Turn Your Home Into an Investment Property

Often times, the rental price on a property will exceed the monthly mortgage payment, so why not let someone else pay the mortgage?  If you’re fortunate enough to be in this situation, it may be the perfect way to pay extra toward your mortgage each month.  If you can swing it, you could go ahead and purchase another property, keeping your negative equity home until you’ve corrected the issue and can sell for a profit, or at least not taking a loss.  Even if you need to wait to buy another home, you can rent another property for less than what you’re paying on your loan.  This gives you even more expendable income to throw at your loan balance! Who knows, you may end up loving the “landlord” business and deciding to keep the property indefinitely!

Refinance

It may be possible to refinance your current loan and trade it in for one with a lower interest rate which will allow you to put more toward the principal each month.  You can also look into HARP, the Home Affordable Refinance Program.  HARP was designed by the Federal Housing Finance Agency to specifically help with refinancing for homeowners who have little to no equity in their homes.  You must be current on your mortgage to qualify.  The good news is that there’s no minimum credit score for approval,  and all of the closing costs can be added into the new loan.
